Aesthetic Gum Grafting

Aesthetic gum grafting is the exact opposite of crown lengthening. If you suffer from gums that are drawing back away from the base of your teeth or if the bone structure that supports those gums is receding, we can resolve the issue in one of two ways:

  • Patient Gum Tissue Transplant - in this procedure, we remove excessive gingival tissue at another location inside your mouth and secure it to the area in need
  • Donor Gum Tissue Transplant - in this procedure, we take donor tissue and graft it onto the area in need of more gum tissue

Based on your unique case, our periodontists will make a recommendation as to what type of material should work ideally. Both types of grafts are equally successful, so your personal preference will play a significant role in the final decision.

Do your teeth look overly bony or long? Don't settle for a grin that ages you. Call Drs. Hakimi, Vasanthan and Townsend to prevent tooth loss and preserve the beauty of your smile.

Keep Your Gums from Receding

When your gums recede, the root structure of your teeth becomes exposed. Since it isn't covered by enamel - the strongest tissue in your entire body - this deeper part of your teeth is nowhere near as capable of defending against the accumulation of bacteria, plaque and cavities. This makes areas of gum recession within your mouth much more prone to decay and, more importantly, bone loss.

Aesthetic gum grafting by our Roseville periodontal specialists benefits you in several key ways:

  1. It provides the cosmetic benefit of a more harmonious, pleasant smile that is uniformly matched among all of your teeth.
  2. Gum grafting offers improved functionality, since thicker gum tissues remain in their new position longer and are more stable. In comparison to thinning gum tissue, this allows your mouth to withstand a greater frequency of normal oral activities like eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.

Sedation can make the entire procedure comfortable. Within two weeks the graft should be entirely healed and you can enjoy your improved smile and normal function!
